149th Alton Memorial Day Parade and Cemetery Ceremony
In 1868, May 30th was designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of comrades who defended their Country.
We are asking for groups from service organizations, schools, churches, and families to help put flowers on soldiers graves.
We also need girls 10-20 years old for the Flower Guard in the parade.
The service at the cemetery will follow as soon as all of the parade reached the cemetery about 11:30 a.m. it will be held at the avenue of flags on the Homer M. Adams Parkway side.
We CAN NOT use artificial flowers anymore.
In the past, we only did one section, but we are now cover all 3,000+ graves. Artificial flowers would have to be picked up again before the grass could be cut. We are still inviting residents to bring any live cut flowers they may have in their yard to the parade, to be used along with the flowers that florists donate. They will be pout on the graves after the service.
