Fundraiser for Wheelchair Van for the Thayer Family
Church to host Spaghetti Dinner, Pie and Silent Auction
On September 20, Cornerstone Church of Bethalto is hosting a fundraiser to help purchase a wheelchair van for a member of the church. The event will feature a spaghetti dinner, pie auction and silent auction and is open to the public.
Nathaniel Thayer, 19, was born with multiple disabilities and is confined to a wheelchair. His parents, Angela and Francis Thayer, were told during their twentieth week of pregnancy that Nathaniel would have sever disabilities and they should abort. As ministers, the Thayers chose life for Nathaniel, knowing they and and he would face many challenges.
"Nathaniel has seizures, is legally blind and is unable to speak," Angela said recently, "but he is a happy boy. His smile and laugh lights up the world. He loves music and going to church. He is very loving and enjoys snuggling."
As he has grown, the family faces the challenge of transporting Nathaniel to and from home. Angela or Francis must lift Nathaniel and his chair in and out of their minivan. Nathaniel weighs 75 pounds and his chair is 90 pounds. In 2014, Angela had a major surgery on her shoulder due to lifting Nathaniel and the wheelchair.
"We are a church that puts much value on life," said Erik Scottberg, lead pastor at the church. "As such we need to honor the Thayers decision to choose life for Nathaniel and help them get a van that meets his needs."
The Church's theme, "Loving God and Loving Others," is what motivates them to help the Thayer family.
"Angela and Francis chose life for Nathaniel," Scottberg said. "We say we value life and the way we can show this is by helping a family that chose life even though they knew it would be a difficult path. if we as a church value life, then we have to stand behind a family that valued life."
The dinner will include spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert for $7 for adults and $3 for children 6-12 years old. Children 6 and under are free. There will also be a silent auction featuring Cardinal tickets, Blues tickets, gift cards, baskets, and craft items. A pie auction featuring homemade pies and baked good will also take place. The dinner will begin at 12:15 at 196 S. Moreland Road in Bethalto.
Cornerstone Church is known for its Fourth of July Fireworks display on the grounds of the St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto. The church also host a Formal Dress Resale and business expo, with proceeds benefiting missions.
