HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL AT ILLINOIS’ LEWIS & CLARK MEMORIAL
July 16th, 2016
Hartford, IL. The Lewis & Clark State Historic Site will host a local Hummingbird Festival on Saturday, July 16th from 9 am to noon. Several hummingbirds are expected to be present to delight Festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and President of the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the morning festivities at 9 am in the site’s air-conditioned auditorium with a 45-minute program about hummingbirds. After the program, hummingbirds will be captured and banded and the visiting participants will be permitted to release them back to the wild.
There is no admission charge for this family event; however, visitors may “adopt” a bird by making a $5 donation to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders. Those who adopt birds will receive an attractive signed certificate, may be able to release the bird they adopted, and will be notified if their birds are ever recaptured.
If hummingbirds appeal to you, then plan on visiting the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site Hummingbird Festival. It should be a very rewarding and entertaining experience. The site may be reached by turning north on to IL Rt. 3 off of I-270; then following IL Rt. 3 north to the first traffic light (about 3 miles). Turn left into the site at the traffic light.
The Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders is a not-for-profit organization to perform sound scientific studies and educational services to monitor, protect and enhance the populations of Illinois’ native birds and their unique environments.
