On Sunday, April 24, The United and College Avenue Presbyterian Churches will hold a joint worship service at the Wood River site, (2550 Rock Hill Road; Wood River), beginning at 10:30 a.m. The purpose will be to observe Earth Day with a focus on creation justice. Milkweed seeds will be distributed to those in attendance for planting in an effort to provide places for Monarch Butterflies to lay eggs. Monarchs lay eggs only on milkweed plants, and since milkweed populations have been declining rapidly, so have the number of Monarchs. An estimated population of Monarchs has plummeted from about one billion in 1997 to 33 million in 2015. Two spots on the church grounds have been designated as official waystations for migrating Monarchs. All are welcome to come participate.
