The Alfresco Arts Center will start its season Feb. 27 with the comedy musical “Two By Two.” The center will have nine productions this year.
GRANITE CITY — The Alfresco Arts Center will start its 2016 season in February with some laughter.
“Two By Two,” a comedy directed by Lisa Garcia Fensterman, will be the first of nine productions in 2016 and is scheduled for Feb. 27-28 and March 5-6.
“‘Two By Two’ is a story of Noah and the flood,” Fensterman said. “God comes to Noah and tells him to build an ark. It’s a comedy and his family thinks he’s crazy. It has the story of his youngest son on how he’s going to get on the ark because he doesn’t have a wife. He has to go find someone to get on the ark with. The flood comes, the rainbow comes out and there’s a happy ending. It’s a comedy. It’s very funny and very family-friendly.”
Dennis Mahlin of St. Charles will play Noah, the play’s main character. Bev Scroggins, president of the Granite City School Board, will play Esther; Maryville Elementary Principal Mark Lull will play Shem; London Kimble, a student at Granite City High School, will play Rachel; and Granite City resident Denny Patterson will play Ham.
“Two By Two” was a Broadway production based on Clifford Odets’ play “The Flowering Peach.”
Also this year, the center will have the production of “Rent” Dec. 2-4 and 9. “Rent” is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a Broadway production.
There will be two children’s shows at the Alfresco Arts Center — “The Fabulous Fable Factory” May 6-7 and 13-14 and “Honk” on Sept. 16-17 and 23-24.
“The Normal Heart” and “August: Osage County” are the only non-musical shows. “The Normal Heart” is scheduled for July 22-24 and 26 and “August: Osage County,” a comedic drama about the life of the Weston family in modern-day Oklahoma, is scheduled for Aug. 19-21 and 27.
“Spring Awakening,” described as a contemporary adult-themed musical, will be the second production on April 1-3 and 8-9.
Musical revue “Smokey Joe’s Café” is scheduled for June 17-19 and 25 and is also directed by Fensterman.
Jekyll and Hyde, a family-friendly play, is scheduled for Oct. 21-23 and 29.
