EDWARDSVILLE — Main Street Community Center is offering the following activities and programs in June:
Soup and salad bar: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in June; homemade soup and a large salad bar, iced tea or coffee for $4 per person.
Diabetes testing: Free A1c Diabetes Screening on Tuesday, June 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. No fasting required. The time slot only allows 10 people to be tested, and tests will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. This testing was made possible from a generous grant received from the Junior Service Club of Edwardsville/Glen Carbon. A special thank you to Alton Memorial Hospital for providing their nurses’ time.
Write Your Own Story class — Led by volunteers throughout the year who provide participants with a choice of topics each week. Participants write a page or two each time they attend class. The class will meet every Thursday at 10 a.m. Participants should bring a spiral-bound notebook and a pen/pencil – or a laptop computer. Cost is $1 per class. MSCC Coffee Talk: Home Safety — On Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. Main Street Community Center will host a free Edwardsville Police Department program to discuss home safety issues.
MSCC Coffee Talk: Mayor Patton — On Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. Main Street Community Center will host Mayor Hal Patton of Edwardsville to discuss what is happening in Edwardsville. All are welcome to this free program.
Main Street Community Center Trip to the Gateway Grizzlies – On Wednesday, June 18, the Community Center will be taking a trip to catch a ballgame. The day includes a bus ride to and from the game, ticket to field box, plus hot dog, chips and a drink for $16. Game time is 11:30 a.m. The bus leaves the Community Center at 10:45 a.m. and returns at 3 p.m. Sign up by June 3; space is limited. All Occasions Card Class — Create 10 greeting cards for upcoming occasions on Thursday, June 26. Class fee is $15 and includes supplies and envelopes. Payment is due at the class.
Autism Spectrum Disorder: Myths and Challenges – On Thursday, June 5, from 7 to 8 p.m., assistant psychology professor Elizabeth McKenney will present Autism Spectrum Disorder: Myths and Challenges. The focus will be on helping participants to analyze information about autism spectrum disorder prevalence, causes and treatments.
Special Presentation: Cooking for One — Main Street Community Center will host Cooking for One at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17. The program will be presented by Gayle Loyd, Anderson Hospital, who will offer tips for cooking meals for one person.
Confessions of a Broadcast Journalist — On Thursday, June 26, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Director of Alumni Affairs Stephen Jankowski will present Confessions of a Broadcast Journalist, a look at the process of gathering, producing and reporting television and radio news from the perspective of a former broadcast journalist. These presentations are open to the public.
Landscaping Workshop — Main Street Community Center is offering a three-part workshop, Landscaping: Plan, Select, Build. This workshop will take place 9 to 11 a.m. on three Saturdays, July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20. July’s topic will be Landscape Planning; August’s topic will be Plan Implementation and Plant Selection; and September’s topic will be Building and Planting a Raised Bed. The fee for this class is $39; for those who register by July 7, registration is buy one, get one free. Advance registration is required, and you can call, stop by, or use online registration. Center seeking those who need home-delivered meals — The Main Street Community Center is seeking seniors and disabled adults who would benefit from the home-delivered meal program. This program offers a balanced meal, prepared by Senior Services Plus, Monday through Friday for $3.50 per day. The meals are delivered to the participant’s home by volunteers. The program is open to Edwardsville and Glen Carbon residents who need meals full-time, part-time and on a temporary or permanent basis.
Square dancing — Beginners are welcome for square dancing at 7 p.m. June 10, 17 and 24.
Paralegal Assistance — Paralegal assistance is offered monthly at Main Street Community Center for seniors and the disabled in the greater Edwardsville area through a partnership with the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Program. Recipients are able to receive assistance with advance directives, simple wills, and other legal matters. Exclusions of criminal and other matters apply. SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) Counselor at MSCC – Main Street Community Center, in partnership with Senior Services Plus-Alton, is offering a SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) counselor at the center one Thursday of every month from 1 to 4 p.m. Appointments are suggested, but walk-ins will be accepted as time allows. Appointments are available for June 5.
Rules of the Road Course – Main Street Community Center will host a free Rules of the Road review course for seniors on Thursday, June 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. No advance registration required.
Exercise Classes – Main Street Community Center offers several exercise classes throughout the week for all ages and abilities:
Stretch & Move – Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., $1 suggested donation
Dance Fitness – Wednesday, 1 to 1:50 p.m., $5/session (First visit free)
Community Center Day Book Club — On Thursday, June 12, at 1 p.m., A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power by Jimmy Carter will be discussed at the Main Street Community Center daytime book club. The Book Club welcomes all. Refreshments are served. Suggested donation is $1.
Community Center Evening Book Club — On Wednesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. The Light between Oceans by M.L. Stedman is the selection for the Main Street Community Center evening book club. Suggested donation is $1.
Color Bingo Days at the Community Center — Wear the designated color to Bingo and get a free card. Tuesday, June 17, wear yellow. Bingo is hosted Tuesdays and Fridays each week, from 1 to 3pm.
Support MSCC with a Schnuck’s eScrip Card — Support Main Street Community Center by designating the Community Center to receive a percentage of purchases.
Game room — Open at all times during regular business hours and featuring board games, puzzles, card games and Wii Bowling.
