ALTON — An ordained evangelist who frequently reaches out to young people and the hearing-impaired is planning a community youth workshop in Alton.
The event will be 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Transformers United for Christ International Outreach Ministries banquet room, 1145 College Ave.
Lorena Burnett, founder of The Gift of God Ministries, is planning the event. Her nonprofit organization reached out in an attempt to give the younger generation a positive direction.
Born in Metropolis and raised in Alton, Burnett attended public schools and has said she was sheltered because of her own hearing disability. Some of her ministry includes on-air teaching and prayers on KSTL-AM 690 in St. Louis. She retired from Olin Corp. with 32 years of service. She is a songwriter, recording artist and poet and has published several books. The workshop targets ages 11 to 29. Snacks will be provided free. Burnett has been giving fund-raisers with hearing-impaired youth since 1996 and working with the hearing-impaired and at-risk youth community since 2009. She may be reached at P.O. Box 492, East Alton, IL or by calling (618) 462-4309.
