GODFREY — The stage will be swinging on Sept. 20 as Greater Alton Concert Association kicks off the new season with the exciting sounds of The Diamonds presenting Bandstand Boogie! — A Salute to American Bandstand.
For the last 75 years GACA has strived to bring excellent performances to the community. With concerts in the comfort of Hatheway Cultural Center on the campus of Lewis & Clark Community College, 5800 Godfrey Road; shuttle buses that run from the free parking and outstanding performers presenting a variety of entertainment, this season continues the great traditions while looking to the future.
The Diamonds released an instant million-selling hit called “Little Darlin’” in 1957. To date that song has sold approximately 20 million copies. They also had gold record hits with “Silhouettes” and “The Stroll.” The group appeared on “American Bandstand” 33 times over the decades. Thousands of viewers remember watching the show every week to see what the cast was wearing, the latest dance steps and the newest music. The Rate-A-Record segment gave a preview of two new songs each week while dancers got to give their opinions on the probability of that song becoming a hit.
The Diamonds have continued to perform throughout the country with symphony orchestras, in major concert halls, on cruise ships, in casinos and on tours of England, Ireland, Brazil, Chile, Korea and Japan. They have found a growing audience among all age groups while performing “songs they can understand, remember and actually sing the words to — today, tomorrow, or even 20 years from now.” They were recently seen on a PBS special saluting the hits of rock ’n’ roll.
In addition to their own hits, this show includes a Motown medley, songs by Elvis, the Beach Boys, Jersey Boys and more.
This Greater Alton Concert Association performance is 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. This is the first in the concert series. Season tickets for all five performances are still available for $80 by calling (618) 468-4222. New this season is the family plan. An extra $15 allows an adult who has purchased a season ticket to bring one or two children ages 4-16 to all performances.
“We want to provide affordable opportunities for families to attend quality performances,” a GACA press release states.
