ALTON — Spencer T. Olin Golf Course, 4701 College Ave., has been named Business of the Month by the RiverBend Growth Association.
“I was very surprised,” general manager Mary Campbell said. “I filled out the application several months ago. I had no idea I would win.”
Campbell recalls the day the award was presented to her.
“It was on a cold winter day,” she said. “We had just finished cleaning the pro shop and the kitchen when cars began to pull up. I saw all of the cars and thought, ‘What’s going on?’”
For the golf course, winning business of the month for March comes at a special time as it celebrates its 25th year in business this spring.
Spencer T. Olin Golf Course lies in the 750-acre Gordon F. Moore Community Park.
Campbell said the course began when Alton officials had the idea to build a golf course in Gordon Moore. The city went to Spencer T. Olin, of Olin Brass, and asked if he would finance the golf course.
“Olin said yes, he would provide the funds as long as his longtime friend, Arnold Palmer, designed the course,” Campbell said.
Spencer T. Olin, a nearly 7,000-yard course, is a place where every golfer, whether skilled or just beginning, can go with its 18-hole championship, 9-hole learning center, practice facility, putting facility and full-time service kitchen, and pro shop with merchandise.
Campbell said the course is open all year long from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting.
“We are open to the public, but we have member pricing that gives frequent golfers the advantage to play more often,” she said.
The course also offers specials. Golfers age 60 and older can purchase a seven-day pass for $1,600 or a five-day pass for $1,300. For people 59 and younger, a seven-day pass can be purchased for $1,900.
In addition to its challenges, Campbell said the course has premium products to offer to golfers, excellent tees, fairways and greens; and a friendly and professional atmosphere.
Campbell said they are planning to do expansions to the pavilion and clubhouse.
