COLLINSVILLE – In association with their recent launch of the groundbreaking Music and Memory Program, Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis is collecting new, slightly used and old iPods to support the program’s efforts.
In partnership with Ravanelli’s Restaurant and YMCA of Southwest Illinois, Unity Hospice has set up donation boxes at the Collinsville Ravanelli’s at 26 Collinsport Drive and O’Fallon YMCA at 284 N 7 Hills Road 62269.
Unity Hospice has provided staff members with iPod Shuffles to complement Music and Memory visits with patients. Ravanelli’s Restaurant, Unity Hospice and YMCA of Southwest Illinois invite community members and local businesses to donate iPods in support of this program, in which all donations will go in the hands of patients and/or family members unable to afford this program on their own.
Unity Hospice is currently the only hospice in Greater St. Louis providing Music and Memory. Most appropriate for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, this alternative therapy program brings personalized music playlists to patients in an effort to restore the sense of self often lost when memory fails. Secured in research about how the brain works, memories that are linked to music are stored in an area of the brain that is not commonly affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Musical memories, such as a memory linked to a wedding song, are often the only connection that Alzheimer’s and dementia patients have left with the outside world.
