Women may be from Venus and men may be from Mars, but this “Martian” form of entertainment is for everyone.
Mars Needs Guitars (Lyndon Sickmeier on lead and vocals, Larry Vandiver on drums and vocals, John Scanlon on bass and backing vocals, and Nathan Sickmeier on violin, guitar, trumpet, keyboards and vocals) was formed in the summer of 2012 by Lyndon and John.
The band says its sound is influenced by “psychedelic and progressive rock of the ’60s and ’70s, electric blues, hard rock, and a touch of jazz.”
Lyndon and Larry’s previous band, The Banned, released an EP in 1998 and opened for national acts George Thorogood, Robin Trower, Chuck Berry, and Ronnie James Dio. Mars Need Guitars also will be opening for Elvin Bishop, Wishbone Ash, Savoy Brown and Point Blank on Sept. 13 at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater.
Mars Need Guitars performs regularly at Mike’s Ten Pin and The Wherehouse in Alton and the Ranch House in Godfrey. MNG material, along with Lyndon’s solo work, can be streamed or downloaded at www.soundcloud.com/lyndon-sickmeier.
Mars Needs Guitars will fill the “classic rock” slot of the Big Gig music festival, taking place from 5 p.m. until midnight on Saturday on Third Street in Downtown Alton. Admission is free, and concertgoers will have the opportunity to help their favorite Big Gig artist win the chance to perform at Riverport Amphitheater during the Mississippi Earthtones Festival this September.
