EDWARDSVILLE – SIUE student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters are looking to continue the pursuit of excellence.
SIUE Intercollegiate Athletics relaunched its Cougar Excellence Fund (www.siuecougars.com/CEF) for anyone interested in supporting SIUE student-athletes’ success on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community.
“We have made great strides for success on the field,” SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt said. “Our ambition is to match the great success we have in the classroom. To do so, it’s going to require continued support.”
As a full-certified member of NCAA Division I, Hewitt said the goal of the Cougar Excellence Fund is to provide student-athletes with opportunities to realize their full potential.
“While the university has stepped up in great measures with fee support as well as facility support, that margin of excellence is going to have to come from our corporate donors and sponsors as well as the friends of our programs,” Hewitt said.
SIUE Athletics, members of the Ohio Valley Conference in all sports except men’s soccer (Missouri Valley Conference) and wrestling (Southern Conference), see many challenges ahead.
“We want to be part of something special and unique,” Hewitt said. “This is an opportunity for our alumni, friends and supporters to be part of the unique path to success for SIUE Athletics.”
SIUE has made significant strides in areas on and off the field. New facilities, noted Hewitt, not only need to be constructed but existing facilities also need new amenities.
One priority is for a second practice gym space. Currently, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball share the same space for practice. And those three sports also share the same space with wrestling for intercollegiate events.
Hewitt said an indoor facility for track and field as well as tennis is a priority. Such a facility could benefit several SIUE sports.
Off the field, Hewitt said additional facilities for academic services are needed.
“We need more computer stations for our student-athletes and more tutorial rooms to assist our student-athletes,” he said.
The new program launched by Intercollegiate Athletics outlines ways to support the Cougars. It includes capital gifts, matching gifts, referring new members, purchasing season tickets, estate planning and endowments, services and partnerships as well as gifts-in-kind.
