HARTFORD — For the first time, the rare astronomical event of a supermoon coinciding with a total lunar eclipse can be viewed between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower, 435 Confluence Tower Dr.
This once in a generation experience will be visible starting from about 7 p.m. with the full eclipse occurring at about 9:10 p.m. Bring your telescopes, cameras and friends to witness what scientists are calling a rare celestial event from 50, 100 and 150 feet high. Admission to this event is $5 per person and includes unlimited trips up and down the tower.
During this supermoon lunar eclipse, the moon gets caught in the shadow of the Earth for approximately an hour. Because sunlight will still reach the moon’s surface, the moon will have a reddish hue. For this reason it’s called a blood moon.
This is the first supermoon eclipse since 1982. Scientist predict the next one won’t occur until 2033.
A supermoon is also known as a perigee moon because it looks to be 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee moon, a moon that is further away from Earth.
“This is the first event of its kind since the tower opened five years ago,” said Deanna Barnes, project manager for the village of Hartford. “We are thrilled we have the opportunity to host this event at the tower. This isn’t going to happen very often. With the lack of city lights hindering our view, we know the tower is going to be the place to be to see this exciting phenomena.”
The tower is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Guided tours are available throughout the day.
Admission to the tower is $4 for adults; $3 for adults older than 62, active military and veterans; $2 for children age 12 and younger; and children 2 and under are admitted free. Group rates are available for 12 or more people and reservations can be made by calling the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau at (618) 465-6676.
