EDWARDSVILLE — Considered one of the greatest movies ever made, the 1963 film “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be shown at the Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville on Thursday, May 15, and Academy-Award nominated actress, Mary Badham, who portrayed “Scout” in the movie, will be on hand to speak to the audience, answer questions and sign autographs.
The event is called “Memories of Mockingbird: An Evening with Scout” and includes both an afternoon matinee at 3 p.m. and an evening show at 7 p.m. At both shows, guests will see the classic movie on the Wildey’s big screen, hear Badham’s perspective on the impact of this important film and have an opportunity to meet her and get a “Selfie with Scout.”
Doors open at 2:30 p.m. for the 3 p.m. showing and at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. showing. Movie Trivia will take place at 6:30 p.m. for prizes. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students (high school and younger) and senior citizens (65 and up) and can be purchased online at www.wildeytheatre.com or by calling the Wildey at (618) 307-1750.
Badham was just 10 years old when she starred as Jean Louise Finch, better known as “Scout,” in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Her portrayal, opposite the legendary Gregory Peck, earned her a nomination for Best-Supporting Actress, (at the time, the youngest actress ever nominated in that category.) She went on to appear in various television series and movies. Today she travels around the country speaking about her experiences with the film while expounding on its message of tolerance and compassion.
“To Kill a Mockingbird is by far one of my favorite movies,” said Friends of Wildey board member and event organizer SJ Morrison. “We’re thrilled to bring ‘Scout’ in person to the Wildey and to show this masterpiece to a new generation of Edwardsville audiences.”
All proceeds from “Memories of Mockingbird” will benefit the Wildey Theatre, a city-owned community performing arts theater at 252 N. Main St. in Downtown Edwardsville. The Friends of the Wildey are grateful to three sponsors for their support of this unique event: Gori-Julian & Associates; Taliana, Buckley & Asa; and Friends of Joan Spiegel at Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance.
