This week’s article is written by Ted Kornegay, a member of Godfrey First United Methodist Church.
In my early years, I was taken to Sunday school by my parents. What I remember most about those early years is that we received a card, smaller than 3x5, that had a picture on one side and a Bible verse or other short message that was compatible with the lesson of the day. I wish I had saved one.
I often think of those years as I attend an adult Bible study, which is usually guided by a textbook study guide. The most recent study I am in is on the subject of angels. In those early years, and all the way up until now, I thought of angels as the good creatures who were there as God’s helpers. I envisioned them as females, like mothers who nurture their young whom they are caring for.
Now I learn that of the angels, 33 1/3 are bad angels; the No. 1 bad one being Satan. I just never thought of Satan as an angel. Now I learn that the influence of these bad angels is what causes a lot of the trouble among humans. I think I may have been influenced by them at times.
Sometimes the punishment for being bad is to windup in the abyss [or PIT]. Hell? Boy, I don’t want to go there.
Now I pray that I will be more alert and aware of the 33 1/3 that I may avoid their influence and be more influenced by the 66 2/3 who will help to show me the right way.
