Did you decide what restaurant was reviewed last time? It was The Airliner Bar & Grill, located at 573 E. Airline Drive in East Alton. Where else can you see Mickey and Minnie Mouse riding a tandem bicycle? The white fish dinner with fries and slaw, bowl of chili with cheese, lots of potato skins and lemonade came to $22.68 with tax.

I had gotten many suggestions to try a certain place, but I had resisted because it only served one kind of food. I finally decided that resistance was futile, uh, I mean silly, so I went there. My companion and I entered a long room with several high, round tables with tall chairs, a beautiful, wooden, oval dining room table at normal height with chairs beside three or four arcade games. Two oval arches led to a bar next door. At the end of the room was the cold case, showcasing the meats and cheese, the menu board and cash register. The customer can choose his or her beverage from a wide selection in a fridge to the right.
There are 12 sandwich specialties that can be adapted any way you like. My friend chose the Reuben at $6.75 and I ordered the Betty, without onion, at $7.75. A diet root beer and a specialty root beer were $1.50 each. The customer pays when ordering and the order is brought to the table.
In only a few minutes, our food was ready. The Reuben was huge, steaming hot, and piled with corned beef, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing and sauerkraut on marble rye. My Betty was even bigger, as I had chosen a baguette as the bread. It was made with turkey breast meat, bacon, lettuce and tomato. I had chosen Swiss cheese and honey mustard sauce. The turkey and lettuce spilled out to the extent that I had to ask for a fork, because I wasn’t going to let the spilled portion go to waste!
The diet root beer was available anywhere, but my root beer was made in Missouri and named after a Siberian tiger. I think it may be the most delicious root beer I have ever had, and I have tasted a lot of root beer from many areas.
The service was friendly and fast. The only drawback I could see was that if one needs to use the restroom, he needs to go next door into the bar.
