Riding in the country and enjoying the beautiful fall foliage, I came upon a place where I had eaten before. There was plenty of parking space available on the large gravel lot. Walking in, I took a moment to read the specials posted near the entrance. Four fish dinners were available, but I craved breakfast! I was greeted immediately and told to sit anywhere I chose. There were booths and tables all over the L-shaped dining room. The walls were a soft olive green, but near the ice-cream counter they were bright orange. I took a seat at a table in view of the counter, where signs advertising specials and desserts were displayed. An assortment of cast-iron baking implements was hanging over the counter, some of which reminded me of similar things from my grandmother’s kitchen. Signs praising coffee were everywhere.
The restrooms were roomy. The women’s room had red walls and a mirror that was large enough to be a portal to another universe!
My server had her name embroidered prominently on her apron and cheerfully took my order. I requested the largest breakfast available. It came promptly, steaming hot, with a sliced biscuit covered in sausage gravy, ham, American fries, scrambled eggs and raisin toast that I spread with apple butter. The American fries were cooked quite dark, but were delicious nonetheless. I enjoyed every bite.
There was a variety of pie available, but I was stuffed. I chose an ice-cream cone of Blue Bunny butter pecan and ate it slowly on the way home.
