Did you guess what restaurant was reviewed last time? It was Dee-Lux Diner at 700 South Central Avenue in Roxana. I neglected to mention the ceiling lamps that look like oil lanterns and the fact that this is a cash-only establishment. This added to the feeling of stepping back in time to the mid-1960s.

My regular dining companion and I were intrigued by a small place in the middle of a busy block. We parked in front and perused the many signs that covered the plate glass windows. I saw some foods that I had never heard of, like fried Kool-Aid, fried Oreos and pizza fries. I also saw some favorites, like fish, chicken and snoots. It had literally been years since I had eaten a snoot! I suddenly just had to get myself a snoot.
We walked in and took a table near the wall. The name of the restaurant was in huge letters above our heads. Above the counter were two flat-screen televisions, one tuned to a sporting match and the other showing a movie. Sweet soul music was also playing from wall speakers.
I ordered a snoot combo with three wings and seasoned fries. I also ordered a side of collards and strawberry lemonade. My friend had the same, only with ice water instead of lemonade.
The unisex restroom was through a doorway. It was a large room, but I walked in on another patron because the door lock was not latched well. I made sure I completely locked it when it was my turn! There were no decorative touches but it had everything necessary.
It took a while for our food to arrive, but when it did, I was very happy with it. The snoots were crunchy and flavorful with lots of sauce, and the wings were steaming hot. They were full-size wings, not “drummies.” The seasoned fries were a little over-seasoned for me, and the collards were too spicy for me to finish. My friend gladly took them off my hands. Lastly, we shared an enormous slice of yummy spice cake.
Each combo was $10; the sides were $2.50, the lemonade was $2.09 and the cake was $2.99. Kids’ meals are $3.99 and sandwiches are available with fries from $6.99 to $8.99.
