Local residents participate in a domestic violence awareness walk organized by Alton Police Chief Jake Simmons.
ALTON — A special walk to bring awareness to domestic violence was organized by Chief Jake Simmons of the Alton Police Department, along with his wife, Shelly; Barb Buhs, Janice Dunphy, and P.J. Bollini.
Participants met at the Alton Amphitheater Thursday, Sept. 18, then took a bus to Ss. Peter and Paul Church, courtesy of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau. The evening began with prayer and a special blessing by Msgr. Kenneth Steffen. Afterward, participants walked to the Alton amphitheater to listen to a special “cup” song performed by the talented Caroline Stephan, followed by the courageous and inspiring testimonials of Buzzy Bertagnoli of Macoupin County and Denise Melchert of Alton.
Walk proceeds were donated to the Oasis Center. Victims of domestic violence can call the Oasis Women’s Center at (618) 465-1978 or go to 11 Market St. in Alton for assistance.
