GODFREY — The Godfrey Firefighters’ Association brought Santa to the Laird family of Godfrey on Christmas morning.
Ryan Laird was born on Sept. 23, 2013, with a congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or HLHS, in which the left side of a child’s heart is severely underdeveloped. Early on, Ryan spent several months at St. Louis Children’s Hospital under intensive 24-hour care. In fact, the Laird family spent last Christmas at Children’s Hospital and Ryan’s older brother Max did not get to enjoy a traditional Christmas morning opening presents.
Ryan is home, but his battle is not over. Because of the special care he needs, parents Drew and Laura have missed eight months of work. Godfrey firefighters wanted to make sure Ryan and Max had a Christmas to remember. A little after 8 a.m. on Christmas morning, Godfrey firefighters brought Santa and presents for Ryan and Max.
