Taylor Holbrook and friends from the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois wanted to help their community. They applied for and received a grant from the Challenge for Change Project. “The $3,500 grant will help the community learn about indigenous plant species,” Taylor said. “There is not a lot of nature for children in the area. Everyone is always on their phones and no one stops to enjoy nature.” With help from the Nature Institute and the Roxana Park and Recreation Department, the grant will fund the planting of native American plant species in Roxana Park. The close proximity to the grade school allows the children to visit the area, study the plants and help keep it looking nice.
