“The only thing bad about it was that he wasn’t here to see it,” reflects Brad Beck of the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club. He was talking about Marine Cpl. Christopher Belchik, who died Aug. 22, 2004, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His mother, Lynn Lenker, was present during the Veterans Day proceedings at the club. A 21-mortar salute was provided by Rodney and Gretchen Cook of Mission American Gratitude Midwest. “The club was formed right after World War II. Shooting and sports kind of go hand in hand. It was shaped by veterans and we are proud of our veterans,” Beck says. For information about the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club, visit www.awrsc.com or call (618) 466-3042.
