“It all started when the ladies of the church would send letters to the servicemen overseas and they started sending back mementos,” Veteran Memorial trustee Don Johann recalls. “My wife says I’m the ‘Sanford and Son’ of military collections.” Don proudly tells of family members and friends who served America. “My mom even helped make Red Cross bandages,” he says. The eclectic collection includes souvenirs from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. But what was truly remarkable is the memorabilia from the American Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and Operation Desert Storm. The items are only on display briefly each year. Although he does thoroughly enjoy putting on the display, he says he is no longer taking donations.
