This week’s article is written by Roger Newberry, a member of Godfrey United Methodist Church, 1100 Airport Road.
In Genesis 28:10-15 Jacob leaves Beersheba and stops overnight at Haran. He dreams about a stairway that goes up to heaven and the angels are going up and down it. The Lord was at the top of the stairway and He extends the covenant from Abraham to Jacob.
However, Jacob needs to have a personal relationship with God. It’s not enough to just know about God like we would know about some historical figure. We need to know Him personally. If we take time to read the Bible daily; to pray; to listen to what He says; to do what He tells us; and to attend church … we will get to know Him.
Many people know about God: that He is good, that He loves us and that He sent His Son, Jesus, to show us how to live. But there is much more than that. We need a personal relationship with God. Like the old hymn says; “Come in today. Come in to stay. Come into my heart Lord Jesus.”
