“No matter where you are in life, you’ll have to be able to read and write,” says Maria Roach, Title 1 specialist at Bethalto Middle School. To foster this idea, teachers, students and their families started Family Reading Night. The evening started with a spaghetti dinner and a speech by Maria. But the highlight was activities designed to get families reading together. Scientific experiments, board games and karaoke involved reading and participating. The library showed students how to download a free app to read books online. “It’s not just reading and writing; it’s also about speaking and listening,” Maria says. The event is held annually in the Trimpe Building at Bethalto Middle School.
