Beautification is the focus of an effort to spread cheer throughout Alton with the installation of banners in the downtown area. Along State Street and Third and Fourth streets, banners were affixed to light poles and display Downtown Alton on one side and Robert Wadlow, the Haskell Playhouse, the Piasa Bird or the Lovejoy monument on the other. The banners were made possible by the Coalition for Alton Beautification group, made up of Alton Main Street, the Alton Beautification and Clean City Committee, the Alton Community Service League and other volunteers. Banners that went up around Lincoln Douglas Square, showcasing red tulips, were made possible by the Alton Beautification and Clean City Committee.
