The Alton Yarn Bombers invited the community to take part Aug. 1-22 in the third annual Alton Area Yarn Bombing. Third Street was decorated with colorful displays of yarn art on light posts, trees and poles. Known as yarn graffiti, the creative designs are not permanent or damaging to public or private property. Yarn bombing began in Texas when knitters tried to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects and took to the streets. Yarn bombing has since spread throughout the globe, inspiring artists to decorate their neighborhoods.
