Road construction presses forward on Broadway in downtown Alton as construction crews continue to pull up concrete. “We don’t have much of a timetable just yet,” Maul Excavating supervisor Dave Willis said. “It’ll be two to three more days before we really know how far up Broadway we will need to go. Initial repairs were made for waterline breaks, but there is also a backup in the pipes. At least the weather hasn’t slowed us up too much.” Maul Excavating and Payne Construction are running eight-hour shifts with a seven-man crew. The work follows the discovery of a hole in the pavement that revealed a hollow area under the street, the effect of washout caused by a water main break on April 17.
