Ginny Long of the Godfrey Women’s Club presented the Golden Leaf award at the club’s April meeting to Margaret Hopkins. The award is presented to those who have distinguished themselves by contributing to the beautification or enrichment of the community. Almost 10 years ago, Hopkins began the tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of about 550 veterans at Alton National Cemetery and organized a ceremony that includes community members to honor these vets. With her pink bow project collecting donations and placing bows on trees, Hopkins has made a major contribution to cancer research. Hopkins also has been involved in raising funds to restore the Lucy Haskell Playhouse and camp scholarships for diabetic children. She’s served on the boards of YWCA and Pride Inc. and is part of the Christmas Eve luminary event in Middletown. Because of Hopkins’ selfless volunteering of her time and talents, club members were proud to honor her with the 2016 Golden Leaf Award.
