WHAT: Alton’s 149th annual Memorial Day Parade
WHEN: May 30
WHERE: College and Washington avenues through Upper Alton
WHY: Alton boasts the longest-running Memorial Day parade in the country, and the 2016 parade continued the tradition. Sponsored by the East End Improvement Association and Upper Alton Association, this year’s event featured World War II Army veteran Art Williams as the grand marshal. A ceremony at Upper Alton Cemetery followed the parade. Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day in 1868 as a way to honor fallen Civil War soldiers.
