When it comes to reading skills, Hartford Elementary principal Heather Johnson and Accelerated Reading Coordinator Gwen Solomon encouraged students with the attitude “whatever it takes.” “When the student involvement reached 90 percent, we wanted to surprise the students,” Johnson says. “One of our teachers, Mrs. Kelly, has goats, so I agreed that I’d kiss the goat wearing bright red lipstick if the kids reached their goal. Isabella the goat didn’t want to be kissed either, so the kids had fun watching us both struggle. I also agreed to a one-sided water fight. The weather didn’t spoil our day, the kids drenched me on the blacktop.” Hartford elementary uses a rainbow to track reading goals throughout the school. All students from kindergarten through fifth grade can earn points for reading books to climb their way onto the rainbow. On Friday, May 29, Johnson kept her promises. The students with the highest points were armed with super-soakers while each student received a water balloon to douse their beloved principal.
