Welcome to the first edition of the AdVantage News.
Today is a new beginning for the AdVantage and its staff.
This is a community-oriented newspaper and website where people can get a weekly collection of news, sports and features.
I have said this publicly several times, but I greatly appreciate my time at my former employer as editor. I felt it was time to make a change when John Simmons and Eric McRoy asked me to participate in this exciting new adventure.
Fred Pollard and Andrew Richards are joining me at the AdVantage News. Fred and Andrew will cover news and features. Don’t be surprised if you bump into either Caleb Motsinger or Hall of Fame sports writer Steve Porter at one of your games.
Pollard is a well-known entertainment and business writer in the region and Richards spent time at the Champaign Urbana News-Gazette as a reporter.
Porter is in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame and Alton City Golf Hall of Fame as a sports writer. Porter is also a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. After 42 years in the news business, he still enjoys covering local games.
Correspondents Ande Yakstis, Frank Prager, Joe Crawford and Jen Papin will also write.
Yakstis was a twice-nominated Pulitzer Prize nominee who retired after a long reporting career.
Prager, Crawford and Papin have had a strong following in Today’s AdVantage. Yakstis was recently recognized with a major human rights award in Alton and has spent years working in that area as a journalist.
Leigh Ann McRoy continues to coordinate announcements, obituaries and press releases. Angie Fulgham leads our graphics department with Tayhlor Sims and Missy Wuellner. Sims will also be taking portrait photos.
Residents and parents want to read about their kids’ accomplishments in sports, not only at the high school level, but all ages.
We want to share your accomplishments with our community.
We will be visible at many area city council or village meetings. We will be seen constantly at community events. We want to cover every sport from football, basketball, baseball and track to wrestling, hockey, swimming, bowling, trap shooting and more.
We think readers want a “hyper local” community approach to news and sports.
We need your help in accomplishing our mission, so e-mail us at email@example.com, call us at (618) 463-0612, or mail items to AdVantage News, P.O. Box 8003, Alton, IL 62002.
