Madison County officials will launch a month of efforts to prevent child abuse starting April 1.
The Third Judicial Circuit Family Violence Prevention Council and Prevent Child Abuse Illinois will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Madison County Administration Building in Edwardsville to launch Child Abuse Prevention Month 2015. This year’s theme is: “How Will You Help?”
Participants include Family Violence Prevention Council co-chair Judge Barbara Crowder, Judge William Mudge, Alternatives Counseling Inc. Director Donya Adkerson, Prevent Child Abuse Illinois Prevention Specialist Tarra Winters and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Madison County Area Administrator Valda Haywood. Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan will read the proclamation.
The Oasis Women’s Center’s Clothesline Project will be on display. A clothesline is hung with T-shirts decorated by victims of domestic violence, many who are children, and their supporters. The T-shirts vividly represent their own feelings and experiences. The Madison County Child Advocacy Center will display the numbers of children involved in investigations of abuse and who have been interviewed at the center last year, with blue and pink paper silhouettes poignantly representing each child. These displays will remain at the Administration Building throughout April.
Many agencies will be present at the event with information on resources and support for families.
