Belle Manor looking at renovation
If a sale to new owners goes through, a $10 million overhaul of the Belle Manor apartment complex may begin as early as this year.
With $900,000 in financing from the Madison County Board through a county program, along with other grant monies and tax credits, renovation plans include new roofs, doors, plumbing and electrical. The construction would affect 60 units and would be done in phases.
Hotel plans on hold
Downtown plans for a new hotel along the riverfront may have hit a snag.
A contract between the city and the contractor has expired without financing for the project completed, and plans to move forward have been put into limbo.
The hotel would be built on the former site of Great Central Lumber at Henry Street near Broadway.
Some members of the community, including those involved with various grassroots and beautification organizations have voiced opposition to the location, saying it would block a view of the river and may not be necessary when other hotels such as Mineral Springs could be renovated and used instead.
City leaders have maintained the hotel would boost tourism and bring dollars into Alton. The Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau also has voiced support for the project.
