ALTON — Alton Memorial Hospital recently opened a Joint Wellness Center aimed at helping patients recover their mobility.
A team of professionals is dedicated to guiding patients throughout the entire process, which begins approximately two weeks before their total hip or knee replacement.
After the patient and orthopedic surgeon decide on a date for surgery, a joint professional will call to discuss the patient’s health history and set up an appointment. The center is adjacent to the AMH Human Motion Institute on the ground floor of the Olin Wing.
“The visit takes about an hour,” said Cynthia Bryant, nurse navigator for the center. “The patient will see a nurse, a pharmacy professional and a physical therapist in that time.”
“We cover what to expect before, during and right after surgery,” said Sue Walker, manager of the Human Motion Institute. “We also discuss pain management, equipment management and physical therapy throughout the continuum of your recovery from the hospital all the way through outpatient physical therapy.”
“Our hope is that we can answer all your questions before you ask them in order to prepare you for your joint journey,” said Angie Henry-Ford, manager of surgical services at AMH.
The center saw its first patients in early June.
