• The days of Market Street serving as the area’s unofficial dumping ground will soon be coming to an end.
The property owner of Market between Sixth and Eighth streets says trash and discarded furniture has been dumped in that area for years, and they are fined if it is not cleaned up, regardless of how it got there. The city will vote on a resolution to install guard rails or “jersey barriers” in the area to make it difficult for people to leave unwanted items in the street or on the property.
• Responding to customer feedback, the U.S. Post Office has installed an additional mailbox near its Belle Street location. It sits near another box which has been an inconvenience for years, as it allows access from the passenger side of a vehicle. Customers were forced to stretch across the car or drive across oncoming traffic to pull up to the box to easily mail letters and bills from the driver’s side.
The new box is located in “Sugar Alley,” the alley that runs behind Third Street between Piasa and State streets.
• Fifth Street from Alby to Market streets, Fourth Street from Alby to Market streets, and Market Street from Third to Sixth streets will be closed from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Aug. 2 for the Market Street Block Party. The eastbound lanes of McAdams Highway (Illinois Route 100) will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until noon on Nov. 29 for the Alton Road Runners Club Annual Road Race.
