Madison County Historical Society
EDWARDSVILLE — The Madison County Historical Society will host a program at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the Archival Library at 715 N. Main St. with National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) archivists Theresa Fitzgerald and Ashley Mattingly.
The professional archivists will explain which records are available at NARA, what can be found within personnel records and how to request them.
Individuals whose family members served in the U.S. military or as a civil servant for the federal government may be able to request their individual personnel record from the NARA in St. Louis.
Many of the Army and Air Force records at the NARA depository in St. Louis were damaged or destroyed in a fire on the sixth floor of the depository in 1973. Restoration of these materials continues to this day and records from other branches of service were not damaged in the fire.
Regular hours for the MCHS Museum and Archival Library are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. The facilities are free and open to the public. For information, call (618) 656-7569.
