ALTON — State Rep. Dan Beiser (D-Alton) recently supported House Bill 5593, a measure that would encourage substance abuse programs to provide further educational information on treatment for opioid addiction.
“Opioid addiction is a very serious problem in our area and throughout the state of Illinois,” Beiser said. “The rate of addiction to heroin and other opioids continues to rise every year. House Bill 5593 is a bipartisan effort to combat this growing issue.”
Beiser also supported House Bill 5594, another bill aimed at reducing the rates of opioid use and addiction throughout the state by ensuring that defendants receiving medication-assisted treatment for opioid abuse or addiction from a licensed physician are not required by the court to forgo that treatment while participating in a drug court program.
Both bills have recently passed the House and will be moving to the Senate.
“I believe that one of the best ways to help battle the increasing rates of opioid addiction is through education,” Beiser said. “These bills will help to provide education and information to those already participating in substance abuse programs, and it will hopefully lead to decreasing numbers of opioid addiction in our area and throughout the state.”

Satellite office hours in Bethalto
Beiser recently hosted his monthly satellite office hours meeting in Bethalto to help provide residents easier access to his staff.
“Holding satellite office hours is very helpful to me because it helps connect me with residents who may not normally be able to make it out to my constituent service office in Alton,” Beiser said. “At my satellite office hours meetings I am able to speak one on one with the folks that I represent. Hearing their thoughts and opinions helps me to do my job as state representative more effectively.”
Beiser hosts such meetings monthly in communities around the region. Residents were encouraged to stop by to meet with Beiser and members of his staff to discuss issues facing Illinois.
“I appreciate Representative Beiser holding office hours in Bethalto and giving me the opportunity to speak with him about issues facing our region,” Ron Schneider of Bethalto said. “I found it very helpful that I was able to have an honest conversation with him about important things happening in Springfield that impact folks in our area.”
