EDWARDSVILLE — A Benton woman died in an early-morning crash Monday on Illinois 4 near Troy after her daughter fell asleep at the wheel, according to the Madison County coroner.
In a press release, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said Diana M. Reginato, 44, of the 700 block of West Division Street, was a front-seat passenger in a 2009 Pontiac G6 southbound on Illinois 4. The driver, Reginato’s daughter, fell asleep and struck a tree 697 feet south of Blue Spruce Lane in St. Jacob Township. A passer-by reported the crash to emergency dispatchers at 2:06 a.m.
Reginato was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital by emergency room physician Dr. Matthew Moelsner. Both were wearing seat belts and the vehicle's airbags deployed. The victims were transported by Highland Fire Department.
Reginato’s daughter, Nichole M. Reginato, 25, of Eldorado, Ill., was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for treatment. Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
The cause of death appears to be neck trauma. Routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol or drugs will be performed. The Illinois State Police continue their investigation of the crash.
Funeral arrangements remain pending at this time.
