LITCHFIELD — A Bethalto woman was killed and an East Alton woman was injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash Tuesday in Macoupin County.
According to an Illinois State Police District 18 press release, Sandra Slezinger, 63, was pronounced dead by the Macoupin County Coroner’s Office after the crash at 12:37 p.m. on Illinois 16 just west of Walker Road. Her passenger, Thelma Branch, 83, of East Alton, was airlifted by ARCH Air Medical Service to a St. Louis hospital.
Police said Slezinger was driving west in a 2008 Kia passenger car when it left the road to the right. She over-corrected back onto the road and lost control of the vehicle, which traveled across the eastbound lanes and went off the road to the left. The vehicle hit the embankment and rolled over. Slezinger was pronounced dead on the scene by the Macoupin County coroner.
Other agencies on scene were Bunker Hill fire and ambulance, the Shipman Fire Department, Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois Department of Transportation.
Illinois 16 was shut down for approximately 3 hours. The crash is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
