EDWARDSVILLE — The Little Free Library in the Robert C. Stille Edwardsville Township Community Park is having a birthday party and everyone is invited.
Edwardsville Township Supervisor Frank Miles announced that a Little Free Birthday Party for the Little Free Library will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Little Free Library, located at the Boundless Playground at the Edwardsville Township Community Park at 6368 Center Grove Road in Edwardsville. Should inclement weather occur, the event will be held at Happy Up, 6654 Edwardsville Crossing Drive in Edwardsville.
“Ivy Obrecht and Sophia Anderson, the two children who spearheaded the Little Free Library effort last year, approached me with the idea of a birthday party to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Little Free Library in Edwardsville Township Community Park,” Miles said. “It’s a great opportunity to remind the community of this wonderful library within the park where books can be freely shared.”
Miles was approached in October 2013 by Glen Carbon resident Erika Obrecht about the possibility of establishing a Little Free Library in Township Park. The idea came from her daughter, Ivy Obrecht, 6, and her niece, Sophia Anderson, 5. Obrecht and Anderson wanted to give back to the community in some way. After learning about the Little Free Library, Obrecht and Anderson felt the library was the perfect opportunity to share their love of reading with the community.
The library is a free-standing structure that houses books that are free for sharing. The library contains adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction books.
“Ivy and Sophia have reached out to the community for donations and sponsorships to make the birthday party really exciting,” Erika Obrecht said. “We have gift certificates to Happy Up, free skate passes for the YMCA, free ice cream at Orange Leaf, gift cards for a free book at Afterwords Books, and bookmarks from Kumon. Sam’s Club has donated cupcakes and the Township is providing drinks. It’s going to be great.”
