ALTON – The Alton Police Department is attempting to piece together a puzzle following the discovery of a body.
Police responded to a call Tuesday and found the body on a property in the 2700 block of Powhatten Street, near Seminary Street.
Neighbors say police were on the scene until at least eight that evening. An older model Mitsubishi Galant, reportedly “in bad shape,” was towed away from the scene around 6 p.m.
Social media was active Tuesday night with speculation about whether the discovery is related to any local cases of missing persons within the last few years.
“At this time, it is too early to determine any sort of identification on the body,” Alton Police Department Public Information Officer PFC Emily Hejna said in a press release released Wednesday.
Alton Police Chief of Detectives Scott Golike said the body appeared to have been there for quite some time.
“The next step is to identify the body,” Golike said. “We are working towards this goal with the help of the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, Madison County Coroner’s Office, and the Illinois State Police. This is normally a methodical process with no real shortcuts.”
