Erin Ahlfield is a registered yoga teacher and one of the owners of Zen & Teas Yoga & Holistic Wellness. Here, she demonstrates Bow, an intermediate yoga posture.
GODFREY — Erin Ahlfield and Lety Murphy met when Ahlfield attended a childbirth class Murphy was leading. Ahlfield is a registered yoga teacher of several years; Murphy holds multiple certifications through the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, including lactation specialist and prenatal coach. She also is an herbalist and aromatherapist.
Besides sharing space in Godfrey, the two share a philosophy. Together, they want to help others at all stages of their lives feel “healthier, stronger and more balanced physically and mentally through yoga practice, healing teas, and total mind-body holistic wellness.”
Ahfield is mom to 7-month-old Harris and frequently brings him to the studio with her. Two of her yoga classes reflect her new lifestyle: Baby & Mommy (or Daddy) Yoga and Family Yoga, both offered Sundays.
“Having Harris has made my teaching perspective much more open to families and trying to coordinate around family schedules so that all can enjoy yoga,” Ahlfield says.
She offers private lessons for those with special needs such as health problems or autism. Come fall, she’ll be teaching the Granite City High School dance team to help them train for their competitions and events.
Unique to the area is Ahfield’s monthly “Painting and Postures” class, attended by a small group of dedicated painters.
“I absolutely love acrylic painting,” Ahlfield says. “Painting and yoga fit together perfectly when working on ‘checking in’ with our inner selves. We meditate on creativity and color and do poses for 30 minutes. You don’t have to be super-artistic.”
Ahlfield will have an art booth at the upcoming Rock the Hops event in downtown Alton where she’ll display her paintings and jewelry.
The 700-square-foot space has a consulting room where Murphy meets clients of Peaceful Heart Essence, her herbal and aromatherapy business. During a consultation, Murphy reviews health concerns and recommends a personalized holistic protocol of herbs. The studio is where she offers hands-on classes to organizations and small groups. Participants typically go home with samples of herbs, salves and other items they learned about or created during class.
Tucked in a back corner is a display of Murphy’s herbal blends and teas, including caffeinated black, green, assam and rooibos teas. She offers 2-ounce loose-leaf tea samples and will search everywhere for just the right certified organic herbs.
“I’m an herb tea snob,” she says.
Murphy leads a free breastfeeding support group on the third Wednesday of each month and will be certified in 2016 as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
The studio isn’t all business, though. On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Lani D’Angelo will teach a Flirt class, described on her Facebook page as a way to “feel feminine, sexy and empowered. We learn a sexy, short dance in one hour. What you do with that dance is totally up to you.”
The studio’s main event is Sunday, Aug. 16. Renew You is an end-of-summer celebration featuring a yoga class, teas, massages and a Tibetan Singing Bowl performance by Katie Roach.
