GRANITE CITY — Born and raised in Granite City, Mike Dawson knew he wanted to give back to his community in a way that benefited everyone.
If you are familiar with the area, you’ll notice the business district of Granite City seems to be improving. Driving past, you may not see the sign for Dawson’s Fitness and Boot Camp because it isn’t flashy or large. However, it is home to about 100 patrons, all of whom enjoy working out, getting healthy and learning more about their bodies.
“If you want to start a workout routine, you should consult your doctor first,” owner Mike Dawson says. “Once they talk to you about where to start or how to proceed, come in and we can modify our workouts to meet all of your needs.”
The point of exercise is to feel better about yourself, burn off calories and energy, and get energized. You can’t do that sitting on the couch, but you shouldn’t do it alone, either.
Studies have shown that up to 17 percent more of Americans are now exercising sufficiently because they understand the problems associated with being overweight. Whether you want to lose a few pounds, get stronger, be more balanced or accomplish any number of other goals, you have options.
“We are a private gym and boot camp,” Dawson says. “We do things a little differently because we have specific classes every day of the week.”
With most gyms, you go in, pick a machine and go at it until you feel worked enough. However, most people need more structure when at the gym, and Dawson provides that. You come in for that day’s class, begin with a rigorous warm up, taught by Mike, and proceed into the workout of the day. While you’ll likely use a variety of machines, weights and perform various exercises, everything is structured so you get the most out of your time.
“We have a family-oriented atmosphere at the gym,” he says. “I was born and raised here, and I love the community. We had an opportunity to partner with the Junior Warriors Organization, which is one of the reasons we stayed in the area.”
Dawson says it gives him a sense of pride to be centrally located where he has grown up and allows him more time to spend with his friends and patrons.
The gym, which opened in December 2014, isn’t the largest facility but does offer everything you need to “get your sweat on.” There is an extensive array of equipment, free weights, dumbbells, punching bags, kettlebells, a sauna and so much more.
Both Mike Dawson and Laura Cell are personal trainers at the fitness center and work with everyone who walks through their doors. They design a workout plan that meets all needs, from cardio to strength building and from relaxing to flexibility. While they are not certified nutritionists, they have a sponsorship with Supplement Superstores.
For anyone who has tried different gyms in the past and stopped going for any reason, Dawson’s Fitness and Boot Camp offers personal attention, a plan that fits your needs and a great network of others who also want to get in shape.
