The former Sonic location at 5216 Godfrey Road will soon have the smell of pizza in the air as the owner of Little Caesars on Godfrey Road has bought the building with the goal to open in December.
GODFREY — Little Caesars on Godfrey Road is “hot and ready” to move forward ... down the street to the former Sonic location at 5216 Godfrey Road.
The new franchise location is looking at a December opening.
“We chose this location because we’re thrilled with the area,” Little Caesars owner Doyle Beck said. “We live in Godfrey and my family is here. We have been at our current location for about 13 1/2 years. This new location is great because of the accessibility, good square footage and it gives us the ability to have a nice drive-through for the hot and ready pizzas.”
Construction is set to begin in about three weeks, with plans to completely clean out the interior and rebuild the inside of the new location. Vandals had stripped a good portion of the interior and dismantled the air conditioning units over time, so Beck felt it was in the best interest to just start fresh.
“We are taking down the old Sonic drive-in awning and we are going to donate the parts and pieces to nonprofit organizations,” Beck said. “A church in Jerseyville is taking part of it for an outdoor pavilion. We hope that other nonprofit groups will contact us and we can donate the rest of the materials. Everything is iron, sheet metal and aluminum. We want to give them to nonprofit organizations first and anyone interested will need to make an appointment with me first.”
Repairs are needed to get the ball rolling for the new Little Caesars location, but the structure is in good condition.
“I believe the inside wouldn’t take a lot to get it up to code,” Godfrey Building and Zoning Administrator Laura Dixon said. “I know a lot of damage had been done over time. I know the building has been vacant since 2012. I think this location could be very successful for this business.”
Beck anticipates that he will need to hire staff members when the time comes to open the new location. He is asking that anyone interested in applying to visit www.littlecaesars.com or drop a resumé by the current Little Caesars location on Godfrey Road in November.
Nonprofit organizations interested in materials from the former Sonic can contact Doyle Beck at (314) 393-5378 during business hours.
