GRANITE CITY — In December 2014, Angie Bivens embarked on a new adventure when she purchased the J. Scott Hair Salon.
After being J. Scott Hair Salon for 32 years and owned by Donna Michaels, Bivens bought the salon at 2901 Iowa St. and changed the name to the Just Teazen Hair Studio. The full-service salon features perms, coloring, styling, waxing, trendsetting cuts, highlights and nail care service.
Angie Bivens, a familiar face in the community, was born and raised in Granite City. She is a graduate of Aloha Cosmetology School in Granite City.
While the salon has a “techno style” décor, it still has the comfortable feeling of friends and family. The interior is adorned with aluminum, black and silver. One corner features a collage of attractive antique hand mirrors. Florescent and off-track lighting provides the right setting for stylists to see what they need to do their best work.
The salon is about to premiere new products, Pravana Locked in Color and the Hemp Organic Line. Pravana ChromaSilk VIVIDS Locked-In is just as vibrant and durable as the ChromaSilk vivid collection of colors. ChromaSilk VIVIDS colors include neons and pastels that can be blended to create a graduated fusion of colors along a hair strand. Hemp oil is high in omega-3 and omega-6, fatty acids effective at coating and conditioning hair. The coating, while remaining light so not to weigh hair down, serves as a protector. It makes it stronger and less susceptible to breaking.
These fatty acids also help to prevent water loss, which improves its ability to act as a natural moisturizer. Most shampoos leave hair dry and susceptible to breaking, making it necessary to use a conditioner any time you shampoo. Because of hemp oil’s conditioning properties, you could find that when using hemp shampoos, you don’t need to use any conditioner.
Hemp oil is also high in vitamin E and zinc, increasing hair growth, preventing hair loss and split ends, and maintaining vibrancy of hair color. If hair loss is a customer’s problem, the salon styles wigs of all types.
In addition to her five children, who often visit the salon, Angie has two dogs as well as chickens, roosters and turkeys. Refusing to leave an injured chicken home alone one day, she brought the pet in to the delight of customers who enjoyed the free “chicken dance” entertainment.
The four stylists and two nail technicians have a combined 85 years of experience in the field. Stylists include Shelly Clark, Chris Scarbough, Dee Cionko and Angie Bivens; and Donna Michaels joins Scarbough as a nail technician (Chris currently has openings).
The team also is community-minded. Angie belongs to the Granite City Business Foundry as well as the Twigs program, participating in the Back to School Free Haircuts and School Supply BBQ event.
Haircuts are $13 ($10 for children, seniors and military), and $10 for everyone on Fridays. Nail prices are $15 with polish, $25 for pedicures and full-set acrylic starts at $30.
Just Teazen is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. For information, call (618) 451-7775.
