ALTON — Down on East Broadway where the roads become steep, a little corner shop used to be the place where ship-hands of old would disembark to procure magazines and newspapers from all over the country.
Years later, this same corner shop would house an insurance company. Now, in 2015, it’s home to one of Alton’s newest businesses, Spoon Baking Company.
Diana and Ryan Schuler opened Spoon Baking Company at 4 E. Broadway in December. The business takes its inspiration from New York bakeries. It is a quaint little bakery that emits smells ranging from sweet baked goods to the bold odor of coffee.
Diana and Ryan are not new to the small business game. A few years ago, the couple ran the Hearty Basket, a home business that made small baskets full of delicious edibles.
The dream of Spoon Baking Company has been with Diana and Ryan for some time.
“We’ve been actively trying to get Spoon Baking Company for 10 years now,” Diana said.
The couple planted fruit-bearing trees some years ago, and now the trees are ready to give fruit that will be used in their scrumptious baked goods.
Spoon Baking Company’s signature item is the Spoon cookie, an oatmeal cookie with walnut and coconut. This cookie melts in your mouth.
“A lot of people are surprised,” Diana said. “It is coconut and people usually aren’t a fan. But tons of people have commented on how good it is.”
Ryan came up with the recipe and they have small samples so people can try before they buy. They also have delicious coffees in a variety of flavors.
Spoon Baking Company has been open for more than a month, and everything has gone off without a hitch.
“It has been smooth,” Diana said. “No melted wedding cakes or torn dresses. It has been a good opening.”
Diana, Ryan and their two children are excited about opening their business in Alton.
“We love it here,” Diana said. “Tons of local business owners have come by to show their support.”
Spoon Baking Company is looking to expand in the future. They are looking at putting seating arrangements outside so customers can relax and enjoy the river view. They are also looking to expand their menu by adding lunch items.
Spoon Baking Company is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and is closed on Sunday. The bakery can be reached at (618) 304-9987.
