River Bend Yoga instructor and co-owner Janet Keffer demonstrates paddleboard yoga.
ALTON — For the third season, River Bend Yoga is offering stand-up paddleboard SUP yoga classes from noon to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday (weather permitting) through Sept. 24.
“Practicing yoga on a paddleboard promises to be a great core workout as you experience balancing from an entirely new perspective,” a River Bend Yoga press release states.
Designed to bring students closer to nature, improve balance, and enhance the ability to face challenges with playfulness, SUP yoga weaves together breath, intention and flowing movement. No prior experience in paddleboarding or yoga is necessary to attend. Modifications and variations will be offered throughout the class to allow students to work at their own levels.
Vicky Delaney, co-owner of River Bend Yoga, explains her experience with SUP yoga.
“In the studio, I find myself trying so hard to do everything perfectly that I sometimes forget how fun yoga is,” she said. “SUP yoga is a reminder that it’s not so serious. The worst that can happen is that I fall in the water and get back up.”
The studio’s yoga classes include Aerial, Beginners, Hot Yoga and Restorative. The yoga studio on State Street in downtown Alton has been in business since June 2014. SUP yoga registration can be completed by messaging the studio on Facebook or calling the studio at (618) 610-7558. Each session is $30, which includes all necessary materials. Small class sizes ensure safety and close interaction with the instructor; therefore pre-registration is required.
