EDWARDSVILLE — The Madison County Coroner’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash Thursday that killed a 44-year-old Granite City woman.
In a press release, Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said Tiney Marie Hunt, of the 2400 block of East 23rd Street, was the rear-seat passenger of a late-model Chevrolet Impala southbound on Century Drive in Granite City. For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and struck a ditch on the east side of the road.
The driver was attempting to take Hunt to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, as it was reported that she had become unconscious and unresponsive in the vehicle. They were calling 911 when the driver lost control of the car.
An autopsy conducted Friday morning revealed a preliminary finding that Hunt died as a result of a cardiac event and not because of injuries from the crash. The driver was airlifted by ARCH Air Medical Services from the scene to Saint Louis University Hospital; her condition is unknown. Another passenger was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City with minor injuries.
Routine toxicology testing will be performed.
The incident also remains under investigation by the Granite City Police Department. Funeral arrangements are pending.
