EDWARDSVILLE — An O’Fallon, Ill., construction worker was killed Thursday afternoon after heavy machinery flipped and pinned him underneath during a road construction project on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus.
In a press release Friday, Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said an investigation continues into the death of Roger R. Kolweier, 47. Kolweier, an employee of Keller Construction, and a co-worker were on Stadium Road off New Poag Road in Edwardsville working on a frontage road on the SIUE campus. Kolweier had been driving a heavy piece of machinery with a roller attached. Preliminary information indicates a portion of the road gave out, causing the machine to flip. Kolweier attempted to jump from the machine but became pinned underneath at the bottom of a creek. An off-duty Illinois State Police trooper and his wife, a nurse, were flagged down by the co-worker to help. They began life-sustaining efforts on Kolweier until Edwardsville fire and EMS personnel arrived on scene but were unable to save him. Madison County Coroner’s Investigator Diondra Horner pronounced Kolweier dead at 4:45 p.m.
The death is under investigation by SIUE police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Preliminary autopsy results indicate Kolweier died from blunt chest and abdominal trauma. Routine toxicological testing will be performed.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wolfersberger Funeral Home in O’Fallon.
